Mobile Backhaul

Plan, orchestrate, and assure multi-domain, packet-based data services in mobile backhaul

Assure Services with Confidence in the Mobile Backhaul With Cortx

Mobile service providers have had to engage in both rapid build-outs and equally rapid adoption of new technologies in order to keep up with customer expectations for high quality, assured data services. The use cases below describe the compelling advantages and tangible benefits to using Cortx to solve real-world challenges in mobile backhaul Lifecycle Service Orchestration (LSO).

CENX helped a Global Tier 1 Service Provider achieve annual opex savings of 38%.

The Challenges of Mobile Backhaul

Orchestrating and assuring services in mobile backhaul remain a serious challenge for service providers. A network with 10,000 cell sites might be served by a combination of on-net circuits, and off-net circuits provided by 5 different AVs. It might also feature microwave, fiber extensions for small cell, and long-haul extensions to get from the MSC to where a particular AAV can handoff to another AAV circuit. Estimates suggest that up to 80%+ of cell sites fail inventory audits. Reliable inventories are difficult to achieve, highly manual and error-prone ordering processes increase the time to turn-up new services, and multi-vendor, multi-domain services remain difficult to assure.

Using Cortx for Mobile Backhaul

Cortx addresses the operational challenges of TDM to packet transformation in the mobile backhaul network. Data integrity is difficult to achieve, provisioning is often complex and manual, and services may involve multiple operators. Cortx’s modularity allows service providers to solve a range of challenges, as well as to augment their solution as their needs evolve beyond inventory integrity assurance, to backhaul build-out and implementation, to end-to-end performance monitoring and management of the backhaul network.

Visualizing and orchestrating mobile backhaul services across multiple technologies, vendors, and domains

Visualizing and orchestrating mobile backhaul services across multiple technologies, vendors, and domains

The complexity of mobile backhaul Lifecycle Service Orchestration still challenges service providers to build an accurate and actionable view of transport services, across multiple technologies, vendors, and domains. Operations personnel tasked with orchestrating mobile backhaul solutions require the comprehensive, detailed but intuitive data and visualization capabilities that Cortx provides.

Along with Cortx’s unified Service information Model and Dynamic Network Analytics (DNA), Cortx’s Continuous Data Audit ensures continuous data integrity and enables a single trusted source for asset inventory. Further, using Cortx’s Automated Reconciliation, operations personnel re-populates inventory systems automatically with clean data to maintain a single multi-vendor, multi-domain source of trusted data.

Cortx’s Service Visualization also provides single control point for monitoring and managing services, including circuit path topology, inventory, faults, automated ordering and provisioning, as well as SLA performance tracking in highly intuitive macro-geographic and detailed path views and dashboards.

Automated ordering and provisioning to reduce opex and speed service turn-up

Policy-driven capacity planning and workflow orchestration to reduce opex and improve user experience

Matching capacity upgrades with market demand and orchestrate service delivery poses serious challenges in mobile backhaul. Service providers can use Cortx to improve capacity planning and workflow orchestration, extend visualization and monitoring control to customers via a self-service interface (e.g., a Web portal), and assure inventory accuracy to reduce service fall-out.

Using Cortx’s workflow orchestration capabilities streamlines business processes, reduces manual processes with policy-driven, workflows and reduces opex associated with service fallout, failed sites, and misconfigurations.

Cortx is also extensible to new and developing topologies including dark fiber, small cell, video/VDSL and next-generation SDN controllers and other technologies – future-proofing a service provider’s investment in a mobile backhaul service orchestration solution.

Service providers can also use Cortx to view traffic statistics for EVCs, and physical ports to better manage capacity planning, manage mission critical class of service parameters like jitter and latency, and use Cortx to reduce both opex and capex by buying what they need, when they need it.

Managing performance, service level assurance, and capacity to assure service quality

Managing performance, service level assurance, and capacity to assure service quality

A common challenge in mobile backhaul LSO is monitoring performance across vendors and domains. Small cell rollouts, in particular, will drive inter-carrier backhaul solutions, making performance monitoring, SLA management, and capacity management only more complicated.

Cortx’s Service Visualization in combination with its Dynamic Network Analytics (DNA) provide network operations personnel with immediate access to near real-time state and monitoring data, as well as extensive analytics to isolate faults to root-cause domains. Cortx’s Real-time Troubleshooting enables operations personnel to isolate and sectionalize fault rapidly across multi-vendor, multi-domain networks, as well as on- and off-net services. This speeds root-cause analysis, reduces MTTR, and improves service uptime.

Further, service providers can use Cortx’s SLA Management to assure service quality and monitor SLA performance across the network. In combination with Cortx’s Network Analytics, Cortx’s SLA Management and Service Visualization provide detailed reports, as well as comprehensive visualization to easily monitor SLA performance. This includes tracking all connections in near real-time including detailed status for operational state, circuit details for fault isolation and resolution. Per-customer reporting also enables service providers to reduce time to reconcile penalties and access costs.
